Media Training

Media Training on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) and HIV

We work with media professionals and civil society in an effort to transform how Uganda's media reports on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) and HIV. Recognizing that sensationalized coverage often deepens trauma and reinforces harmful stereotypes, this initiative focuses on building capacity for ethical, victim-centered journalism. Through comprehensive training programs, we are equipping journalists and content creators with practical skills in trauma-informed interviewing, responsible language use, and protecting survivor privacy and dignity. Our approach emphasizes both the ethical imperatives and technical competencies needed for sensitive reporting on these complex issues.

Transforming how Ugandan media reports on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) and HIV

To date, we have successfully trained 40 media professionals—including journalists from major outlets, community reporters, bloggers, and refugee community representatives—creating a diverse network committed to raising reporting standards across all media platforms. This growing coalition is working to ensure that media coverage not only avoids harm but actively supports survivors and promotes public understanding. By fostering dialogue between journalists, healthcare providers, and gender-based violence specialists, we are helping build a media ecosystem that prioritizes ethical practice, protects vulnerable populations, and contributes to more informed public conversations about SGBV and HIV prevention.
